Post Op Care Instructions
Things to watch for: Active bleeding is an urgent concern. If blood is visibly flowing apply pressure to the wound to stop bleeding, and contact Dr Sales, Dr Lindsay or dial 000 for the ambulance.
Also contact Dr Sales, Dr Lindsay or the surgery if there is increasing redness, increasing pain, extruding head through the ring or inability to urinate. The ring should have fallen off itself by 4 to 10 days postoperatively. Contact the surgery if it is still attached 10 days after operation.
Bathe the baby daily. Apply Betadine Ointment to the ring and wound every nappy change and after bathing for 3 days and then Vaseline for 4 weeks.
Use disposable nappies for 3 weeks after the surgery with frequent changes. If a reaction to the Betadine occurs - ie redness or irritation, Vaseline could be used on the wound with each change instead.
Use paracetamol 0.6ml of 100mg/ml if he is in pain. Maximum 4 doses in 24 hours.
There is no need to be reviewed at the surgery after the operation unless there is a problem.
